A recent update about me that really amuses me is that I have picked up a skill I used to think was not my thing.
Hairstyling was something I was never interested in learning. I always saw it as something very, very difficult. I preferred the idea of going to a salon, getting my hair done and enjoying the service rather than being the person providing it. It was even a struggle to style my own wigs, and I think I was quite comfortable paying someone else to do it.
But here I am, learning and enjoying hairstyling.
I eventually took the bold step to learn the skill, largely because of the encouragement I got from my partner and friends. Even before I started, I had already told myself that if I didn't like it, at least I would have tried it. That way, I would know from experience that it wasn't for me instead of just looking at it from a distance and saying, "That can never be me."
One week into training, I was already feeling discouraged, but I still showed up for the second week. And honestly, I don't think encouragement through words alone was what kept me going. What helped was that I could see a better plan for myself if I learnt the skill. I kept thinking about the possibilities and what I could do with it, and that was enough to keep me going until I started enjoying the process.
I also began to realise that I genuinely enjoy seeing women leave the salon looking beautiful and feeling happy with how their hair turned out. In fact, even as a student, I was doing too much hyping people up after a nice installation. Lol.
I had my first training, then continued with online classes. I could see my growth, the things I was getting better at and the areas where I still needed to improve. Eventually, I decided to take a masterclass to upgrade my skills. By then, I had already started envisioning the niche I wanted for my brand, and I knew I needed to learn from a more experienced hairstylist to help me work towards that vision.
These days, I practise on models and clients, and sometimes I even style people's wigs just to get better. I am learning, improving and becoming more comfortable with something I once thought I could never enjoy.
Now, coming back to the realisation that inspired this post, sometimes you really cannot be sure you dislike something until you have tried it. In my case, I had tried styling my own wigs and found the whole experience stressful. I just knew I couldn't deal with it. But somehow, here I am, enjoying the entire process. People bring their wigs to me, and I get to work on them, giving them a fresh look and making them look brand new.
Of course, I had encouragement, but I also had a plan. I could see better possibilities and a future in learning this skill. However, I won't pretend that having a plan automatically made me love the process. At the beginning, I still preferred what I was already doing to learning something I wasn't sure I would enjoy. So, I wouldn't say sweet words alone got me here.
I am not someone who does things simply because they are trending. I like to be realistic about what I am getting into and whether it makes sense for me.
This is just my current update, but it has also reminded me that there are so many skills to learn. And who says you have to stop at one? If you think you want to try something else, why not?
I also don't think people necessarily care that much about why you do what you do. It is rarely the question people ask. They are more interested in the how, what you can do and what you have to offer.
For me, I love being a software engineer, but trust me, I won't think twice about exploring a different profession or even becoming a full-time stylist if that is what I genuinely want. I don't think I have to limit myself to one thing simply because that is what I have always done. What matters to me is enjoying what I do and being able to see myself growing in it.
And right now, I am enjoying this so much. I get to meet different people, have all sorts of conversations with them and, most importantly, make them feel beautiful.
Awwwn. It is actually so cute. Imagine how cute that is, guyssss. ðŸ¤
